Lib Dems Launch Thermal Clothing Campaign
2 Nov 2024
Lib Dem campaigner Josie Mullen is spearheading a campaign to keep Liverpool’s elderly and less fortunate population warm this winter.
Josie is backed by local Much Woolton Councillor Dave Aizlewood, Lib Dem leader Cllr Carl Cashman and former Council Leader Lord Mike Storey. However, the biggest backer is John Lewis who are set to donate a lot of thermal wear to the campaign.
Josie Mullen has teamed up with Age Concern and is writing to big businesses and organisations, similar to John Lewis, to try to get backing for the campaign.
Josie said ‘I am absolutely thrilled that John Lewis have backed the campaign and I hope that many more will too. We have written to twenty companies requesting donations of thermal clothing.
Fuel Poverty Charity National Energy Action has estimated that 4,020 excess winter deaths in the UK were caused by living in cold homes during winter 2022/23.
The Labour government has now decided to cancel the Winter Fuel Payment for 9.4 million pensioners. 1.6 million of these are disabled. Without this payment many pensioners will not be able to heat their homes adequately during the Winter months and this will inevitably lead to an increase in the number of deaths due to hypothermia.
We will be knocking on doors to collect signatures for our petition, requesting the Labour council donates, at least, the sum of £20,000 in order to buy more thermal clothing. We will then use the expertise of Age Concern, charities and councillors to distribute this clothing to the most vulnerable residents in our city.’ said Josie.
