Josie Mullen leads fight back for Woolton and Hunts Cross residents
Liberal Democrats select retired teacher Josie Mullen as their candidate in Much Woolton and Hunts Cross by-election
After the sudden resignation of the one of Much Woolton and Hunts Cross’s councillors David Aizelwood because of poor health, the Liverpool Lib Dems have selected an experienced community campaigner Josie Mullen for the forthcoming by-election.
Mullen was a school teacher in Toxteth and has previously been a councillor for the old Broadgreen and then Knotty Ash Wards during the 2000s before stepping down to take some time away from politics. In more recent years, Mullen has taken action to uncover corruption within Liverpool Labour Party and the City Council - including the Tarmacademy that never materailised.
If the Liberal Democrats win this by-election it will put an end to Labour’s 27 year by-election win streak in Liverpool. Labour last lost a by-election in 1997 in the Melrose Ward by-election on December 11th.
Liberal Democrat Candidate Josie Mullen, said “I’ve spent a lot of my time listening to residents in Woolton and Hunts Cross - they are fed up with the Labour-run Council not delivering the services they pay for, their Labour MP for ignoring their concerns, and the Labour Government for making their lives harder. I will work hard for the residents of Woolton and Hunts Cross all year round - listening to their concerns and getting the results they deserve.
“Starmer and Reeves have put thousands of low income pensioners at risk of falling into fuel poverty. I could just sit and moan about it but I decided to take action. That’s why I set up a scheme with the help of the Liverpool Lib Dems and Age UK to provide free thermal clothing to pensioners in Liverpool - we contacted a number of retailers and John Lewis has partnered up with us to make sure that Liverpool’s pensioners don’t go cold this Christmas.
“This by-election is a chance for voters to send Labour a message”
Cllr Carl Cashman, Leader of the Opposition on Liverpool City Council, said “I want to thank Dave Aizelwood for his hard work for Woolton and Hunts Cross, it is always sad when a friend and colleague has to step down but we wish him well as he takes some time away to recover. I know that Josie will make a fantastic councillor - she’s hard working, passionate and active in the local community. She’s not afraid to ask difficult questions and get stuck in. She’ll fight hard for the residents of Woolton and Hunts Cross.”
